Soledad cross foes want order reversed
Opponents of the cross atop Mount Soledad urged a U.S. appeals court yesterday to overturn a federal judge's ruling in July that said the controversial La Jolla landmark could remain. San Onofre reactor shut for maintenance

State extends alcohol ban at Silver Strand beach
Silver Strand State Beach stood alone last summer, the only beach in the county where a beer or glass of wine was legal. No more. The state is banning alcohol from Silver Strand between March 16 and Sept. 30, beginning this year. The action follows a disorderly, alcohol-fueled Fourth of July weekend at the beach and a more sedate Labor Day weekend under an experimental booze ban.
