توفي الأربعاء 10-3-2010 الشيخ محمد سيد طنطاوي شيخ الجامع الأزهر في العاصمة السعودية الرياض إثر إصابته بنوبة قلبية. وحضر الشيخ طنطاوي إلى السعودية للمشاركة في حفل توزيع جوائز الملك فيصل العالمية.
وكان الزميل فهيد بن جليد قد اجرى لقاء حصريا لقناة ام بي سي، مع شيخ الأزهر قبل وفاته مباشرة.
وقال د. محمد عبدالعزيز واصل وكيل شيخ الأزهر فى تصريحات لقناة النيل الإخبارية "تلقينا نبأ الوفاة فى تمام التاسعة صباحاً، وأن شيخ الأزهر لم يكن يشكو من أى مرض، وأخبرنا نجل شيخ الأزهر المستشارعمرو محمد سيد طنطاوى بأنه تم الاتفاق مع رئاسة الجمهورية على أن شيخ الأزهر سيدفن بمقابر البقيع بالمدينة المنورة".
ولد الشيخ طنطاوي في محافظة سوهاج في 28 تشرين الأول (أكتوبر) 1928، وحصل على شهادة الدكتوراة في الحديث والتفسير عام 1966 بتقدير ممتاز، وعمل مدرساً في كلية أصول الدين، ثم انتدب للتدريس في ليبيا لمدة أربع سنوات.
وعمل الشيخ طنطاوي في المدينة المنورة عميداً لكلية الدراسات الإسلامية العليا بالجامعة الإسلامية، وفي 28 أكتوبر من عام 1986 عين مفتياً للديار المصرية، ثم عين شيخاً للأزهر عام 1996.
ويجمع علماء الدين في مصر على سعة علم الشيخ طنطاوي واطلاعه الديني. ويقول محللون إنه صاحب دور بارز في الحفاظ على الوئام بين المسلمين والأقلية المسيحية في مصر، ويشيرون إلى علاقته الوطيدة بالبابا شنودة الثالث بابا الأقباط الأرثوذكس الذين يشكلون أغلبية المسيحيين في البلاد.
وللفقيد مؤلفات عدة من أهمها: بنو إسرائيل فى القرآن والسنة (1969)، التفسير الوسيط للقرآن الكريم (1972)، القصة فى القرآن الكريم (1990)، ومعاملات البنوك وأحكامها الشرعية (1991).
ومن أبرز فتاوى طنطاوي، جواز التحاق الفتيات بالكليات العسكرية والجيش. كما رأى ان المرأة "تصلح ان تكون رئيسة للجمهورية وتتمتع بالولاية العامة التي تؤهلها لشغل المنصب".
