All Things Pakistan: Zebra Kicks Giraffe to Death at Lahore Zoo

Adil Najam and Owais Mughal

The phase of general unrest and ‘zulm’ that Pakistani society is passing through lately seems to have reached Animal Kingdom too.

Three precious animals have died in Lahore area zoos in the past 1 week and from news it looks like all deaths were preventable. A giraffe, a Bengal tiger and a neel gaaye (wild boar) are those who lost their lives.

Following two news have appeared in national press which give details of these accidents.

(1) Daily Times of January 2, 2009

A zebra attacked a female giraffe in the city zoo on Thursday afternoon and killed it in presence of zoo staff and dozens of visitors. According to sources, three giraffe, a male and two females, were imported from Australia in 2007 at a cost of Rs 7.4 million and were kept in one compound without keeping in view the risk factors.

On Thursday, a zebra attacked the giraffe and kicked it to death. The zoo staff was also present, but could not do anything to save the animal. An inquiry committee has been set up to investigate the incident. It will present its report to the Wildlife Department director general in a couple of days. aaj kal report

(2) The Daily Jang - Web Update, January 9, 2009

After eating the meat of a dead wild boar (neel gaaye), the Bengal Tiger of the Woodland Zoo located on Raiwind Road Lahore also died. Earlier the neel gaaye had died after being bitten by some poisonous insect. The staff of the zoo used dead neel gaaye’s meat to feed the Bengal Tiger who also died after eating the meat. The deputy director of Woodland Park claims tiger did not die because of eating ‘neel gaaye’s meat. They will conduct post mortem to find out the exact cause of tiger’s death. The exact news as it appeared in jang is below:

Cosmopolistan: The tale of the gora - chita Bollywood extra
‘Caucasian, you say? Excellent, excellent: oh, what’s on the menu? Chai, some aaloo walay parathay, and a blink-and-miss role in our upcoming production, (insert title of Bollywood flick here)

‘Aah, doodh-pati, an excellent choice. Now, which brand of stereotype would you like for your role?’

We see them practically everywhere; cleverly concealed behind Akshay Kumar’s taut frame in a dance video, the next door neighbours in a Karan Johar chickflick, and God help us all if its an attempt at a pre-independence epic.

Yes, we’re talking about the gora extras (the most recent one that comes to memory is the staple homosexual assistant howling: ‘He’s here!’ at Verve, upon the arrival of Boman Irani’s character) that frequent Bollywood movies, be they through small cameos, appearances in music videos, or simply randomly placed in the background to give a desi production that ‘international feel.’

Yet we never stop and wonder: where do these people come from? How do they agree to what in most cases seems like plain torture? Is it the money – the five minutes of fame – or simply the thrill of coming onscreen?

No, that doesn’t sound right. Imagine a proud American/British/enter desired nationality here dad telling his five year olds:
‘Look, look, I’m the guy partially obstructed by Mallika Sherawat’s bosom in this scene.’

Anyhow, we came across an article that seems to answer some of our queries – written by David Segal, it gives a first-hand experience on his day as a Bollywood extra.

And it makes for great reading. We feel you, David – and you too, Maia.

Cosmopolistan: Proudly Presenting: The 14th Annual (Everyone’s a) Critics’ Choice Awards!
2009 has officially ushered in the award season (The Golden Globes, the Oscars, and the fashion faux pas* that ensue) with the 14th Critics’ Choice Awards, handed out on the 8th of January.

Movie-buffs must have already checked out the winners’ list. Fanatics/know-it-alls must have committed each chart to memory.

However, for those who really couldn’t give a toss about who won, but want to check out the ‘it-films’ to purchase from Illusions/download the torrents of; movies with greater IQ level than say, a Marley & Me, or a Beverly Hills Chihuahua, click here.

For all you testosterone-filled teenagers who couldn’t get enough of him last year, and who only want one thing from us girls:

Yes, Heath Ledger won the Best Supporting Actor trophy for his performance in The Dark Knight. You may now close this browser and start wankingjumping with joy.

Some interesting observations we made:

Underdog Slumdog Millionaire led the field with five awards – however, we contest its win for Best Picture and Best Director. Wall-E should have won Best Picture! Before you open that mouth to protest, answer this: have you even seen Wall-E?

However, even Wall-E’s nomination is a sign of changing times. The only other animated film to be nominated in the Best Picture category (The Academy Awards) was 1992’s Beauty and the Beast. Which, come to think of it, should have won too.

Danny Boyle, you were brilliant and all, but seriously: there’s no match for director David Fincher’s craftsmanship in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

A tie for the Best Actress win? Why not just go ahead and give everyone a sodding award then. (We love you, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep!)

A.R. Rehman wins Best Composer for his sublime work in Slumdog Millionaire! Took you long enough to recognize genius, guys.
Why in the name of all that is Holy was “Another Way to Die” (read: insipid Bond song for an equally insipid Bond movie) even nominated in the Best Song category?

*And speaking of fashion faux pas: Sarah Silverman, we love you (especially for giving us: I'm fuc*ing Matt Damon) but what the hell is this,
Anne Hathaway = Cruella de Vil hangover,
Marisa Tomei, because she can-can-can't,
The usually classy Katy Perry, in a lingerie ad gone wrong,
Kristen Bell, voice behind 'Gossip Girl'/Elle Bishop from 'Heroes,' looking like a leftover from a trashy Paris Hilton party, (Not convinced? Check this one out)
Oh sweet Jesus what is this?!
But the one that takes the cake and is posted below:

Oh, Angelina: we practically worship you - but you look like a bedsheet. The world's most beautiful woman: a bedsheet.

Did we hear the collective breaking of a million hearts?

Thought so.

Lahore Metblogs: 4 blasts@Mall Road and one@Ferozpur Road

During last two hours, Lahore experienced four blasts near Alflah building on Mall Road and the recent, fifth blast is just heard near Tamaseel Theatre on Ferozpur Road. Investigations are going on and most of blasts are considered a result of “crackers” as they were not so powerful. Media is airing live footage, playing a vital role to inform public.
I find so much rage against these terrorist activities, even if it is for harassment by antisocial elements. It is happening right after first ten days of month of Muharram, when security measures seemed bit relaxed. I request LMB readers to pray for peace and serenity, that is all we can do right away (yeah, feeling helpless).
