Wrath of the Lich King Review
Transforming the World of Warcraft into a fully interactive environment marked an evolution in gaming back in 2004, and Blizzard continues on this innovative path with the release of the impressive Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack. Starting from a user base of over 11 million active users, the expansion breathes new life into a game that had grown beyond the wildest expectations of its developers. Following up on the original Burning Crusade expansion, Wrath of the Lich King brings a slew of new features, and adventures to be had.
The newest area introduced in the expansion pack is the continent of Northrend, which is where you will spend your time grinding from level 70 to the new cap, level 80. With the release of WotLK, you’ll have two new starting areas: the western Borean Tundra areas presents a number of new challenges, while the western Howling Fjord cliffs really raise the bar on level of difficulty for even the most experienced WoW player. This differs from Burning Crusade, which only had one starting area and, if you care to recall, caused tremendous strain on the servers as everyone tried to rush the Dark Portal. By introducing 2 starting areas Blizzard hopes to alleviate some of that strain and lag.
The sheer diversity of Northrend is truly impressive, and adds a lot of value to World of Warcraft. Blizzard paid careful attention to the design, layout and composition of the new areas. Both are graphically impressive in detail, as well as exciting to explore. To continue to push the graphical qualities of WoW is surprising to me because, frankly, the engine is pretty dated. But, Blizzard knows how to pull it off.
Not only are the new lands themselves quite impressive, but you’ll also get to explore some innovative dungeon layouts, starting with Utgarde Keep. Also, I can’t forget about the visually stunning Halls of Stone in Uldum. The new bosses will require you to rethink the way you conduct battle: the new dungeon enemies will challenge you to innovate in both your defenses and your attacks.
One change that is sure to rub people the wrong way is the immobilizing of flying mounts until level 77. I can already see angry forum rants filling up the WotLK message boards. However, the reasoning behind this change is very sound. Blizzard wants you to take time going through the quests and exploring the continent instead of flying over content that you should be exploring.
You can now conduct raids in 10 or 25-player groups along with your guild, which should make large portions of the game more accessible to intermediate players. The instances will scale the enemies to the 10-player groups, which is going to save a lot of time because now you don’t have to wait around trying to fill a 25-man raid.
Wrath of the Lich King introduces the Death Knight class, WoW’s first new class since the 2004 launch. Only players level 55 or beyond have access to the new class. They have their own dedicated starting area, and the storyline is excellently told making the new level an integrated adventure from beginning to end. The Death Knight abilities are truly unique and are focused on inflicting disease upon your opponents by regenerating magical runes. I am sure you will see a lot of Death Knights popping up because they are truly a joy to play.
Competitive combat is limited to the Wintergrasp Lake and the Grizzly Hills, which is a flash point for Alliance versus Horde clan combat. While there are plenty of opportunities to engage other players in the Hills, none of them are prerequisites to completing tasks - instead, they are byproducts of dynamic, fast paced quests. Wintergrasp places factions head to head in defense of the Keep, which makes for some fierce battles while providing a continent-wide buff for the dominant faction.
If you were put off by the Burning Crusade, don’t worry because WotLK far surpasses it. For both, hardcore and casual, World of Warcraft gamers, the Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack is a must-buy. The expansion opens up an entirely new set of game play options, in addition to expanding the World map with plenty of new zones. If you have largely encountered the existing universe, you’ll find a new set of challenges and if you’re still building up your character then you’ll surely quicken your grinding pace to see the whole new side to the World of Warcraft. Blizzard clearly put in a lot of attention to detail to make this expansion much more than the just another same-old WoW experience.
