The Discussion Of CCNA Advice For You

# 01 nikalex

I am currently planning to start studying for my CCNA certification.

Is self study the best one or attending classes? Which books are most recommended for CCNA Routing and Switching?

Is it better to take CCNA once or start from ICND1 and ICND2?

# 02 Kailen Harper

I have allways felt the two exam option and self study is the best way to move forward with a CCNA. The Cisco press books by Wendel Odom for ICND1&2 are an excelent choice. Most importantly though is to get a couple of routers or Dynamips and practice. Learning it in a book and actually doing it are very different things. Watch all of the videos on the site here and play the binary game A LOT. Subnetting is the most important thing to learn since without it the tests will take significantly longer to complete. And time is a valuable resource on the test. 642-445

Get the first book, watch the videos, ask a lot of questions in the forums and just keep working at it. Remember even the CCIE’s had to start somewhere.

# 03 Ryan Helton

Yup, I agree with the poster above. I just passed the ICND1 exam and I felt very prepared having used the ICND1 study guide by Wendell Odom and the CCNA study guide from sybex. I also practiced ios commands using GS3. 642-811

# 04 nikalex

Thank you so much for this valuable advice.I heard Cisco has many versions of routers and switches.

Which ones would you most recommend me for practice? I would move those ones cheap and which can be used for CCNP preparation as well.

# 05 Garry Richardson

Hi there, i also agree with all comments above! i passed CCENT 8 weeks ago and nearly read ICND2. I used Cisco Press materials and CBT nuggets, these 2 products go together a treat!

In regards to lab equipmment, a lot of people say you dont need any equipment to get pass CCENT / CCNA but i purchased for CCENT, 2 2500’s and 1 2950 CAT Switch I found it helped a lot, plus its fun playing with live Cisco IOS.

For ICND2 i’ve purchased another CAT 2950, another 2500 and a 2600. The ICND2 explorers into STP, VTP, Inter-Vlan-Routing and much more. The kit i have now, allows me to setup a network, working with all CCNA layer 2/3 protocols and much more. 000-331

I would advise anyone to spend between £100-£200 on some Cisco Kit when working through the Certs.

# 06 Mike Keedy

I’m following the self study track too, I find the Cisco Press books excellent, use the Boson simulator software and have a few 2nd hand routers and switches for practice.

Good luck in your certification, I’m planning to go straight for the CCNA exam, I hope I’ve made the right descision

# 07 Ryan Helton

Hey Mike, I’d say you’re making the right choice just going for the CCNA exam all at once. To tell you the truth I wish I had just done that becuase I feel like I was almost overprepared for the ICND1 and with a little more study of the ICND2 concepts I could have just knocked out the whole thing in one test. 000-331

# 08 Kerry LeBlanc

I agree with all the good advice here. I decided to go the one exam path myself. For resources I am using the Cisco Press set by Wendell Odem. I also have Todd Lammle’s book (Sybex Study Gude) which is excellent. I bought the Boson Exam simulator and the NetSim as well. I think the Boson exam environment is the most accurate for feel and look. 350-029

I also purchsed some equipment from CiscoKits.com. The books and simulators are great, but nothing compares to laying your hands on the real deal. I got two routers, one switch and a great lab book for about 250.00. Plus the equipment will be what I need as I move on to the CCNP.

Another good resource is the Brynat Advantage. Fairly inexpensive. MB7-515

Chris Corino’s 3 Questions About CCNA
I figured this was going to be a short post, but the more I think about it, the longer it gets, LOL. So I am just going to throw out a couple questions I am confused about, and if you can answer ANY of them, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance! Hope everyone’s work-week is going well!

I am planning for my CCVP due to work requirements. I’m extremely excited. However, I have to get my CCNA or CCNA Voice cert. first. Which do you recommend? Pro/cons?
If I go for the CCNA, I either take the CCNA exam or take the ICND1 and ICND2, correct? Recommendations?
When I look up the CCVP, it says the prerequisites are “CCNA (until June 24, 2009)”. Why is there a deadline? Is the exam being retired or changed?
More of a story, not really a question: Not even knowing there was a “CCNA Voice” certification, I bought a book yesterday from Barnes and Noble. I couldn’t understand how it was possible, but listen to this: I can either buy the CCNA Cert. Library for $95 that trains you on JUST the CCNA. OR I could buy a CCNA cert. Library for $60 that trains you on the CCNA, ICND1, and ICND2, along with a 1-hour training DVD, and 2 CD’s with the books on PDF, and 400 practice questions. Anyone see anything wrong with that picture?!? They were both made by Cisco, but the $60 one was a “Barnes and Noble Exclusive Edition”. Needless to say, I got the $60 one. 70-631

Helpful answer form Timothy Walsh:

You’ll need to do it in the following order:

CCNA (Note that you can break this into two tests, ICND1 which gets you the CCENT certification followed by the ICND2 which then makes you a CCNA)
CCNA-Voice (This certification requires you to first be a CCNA, hence step 1. This is a new cert which is why the CCVP has the deadline you spoke of, basically Cisco is allowing those of us already working on the CCVP to finish it before requiring the CCNA-Voice cert.)
CCVP (Currently only requires the CCNA, but after 6/24/09 will require the CCNA-Voice cert) 642-444

CCNA Discovery 4, Is the First 2 Modules Enough For CCENT Exam?
# 01 Araza

Dear All, I am thinking in registering for NETCAD and wanted some advice. It says that after the first 2 modules in the CCNA Discovery 4.0 you will have all the material to sit for the CCENT certification exam, is this true? Not calling Cisco liars but has anyone who has studied the first 2 modules of the CCNA Discovery 4.0 set the CCENT exam? If yes, can you advise if the first 2 modules are sufficient. 650-251

# 02 Chetan

Hi Araza, I completed CCNA Exploration 4.0 course from NETACAD, India in august this year. Contentwise, Cisco says that Exploration track is more advanced than the Discovery Track. 156-215.1

The course curriculum is good.

First two modules of Discovery 4.0 track are meant for the CCENT certification. And they cover all the necessary topics in sufficient detail. But my personal advice is that not to rely on First two Modules completely although they cover the required syllabus.

Keeping in mind the long term goal of obtaining CCNA certificate after CCENT, I personally think that one should Also go for CCENT / CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide by Wendell Odom. 70-624

Cisco NetAcad Material + Cisco Press Books are a great combination. The online tests at the academy are also of good quality.

# 03 Araza

Hi Chetan, Thanks man, that makes a lot of sense. I have purchased the Wendell Odom ICND1 book as well. I am thinking of buying the CBT videos. I am very new to networking so i need all the info that i can get. I don’t want to buy too much as this will confuse me so i thought one book and one video should do. Once again thanks for your advice.

# 04 Chetan

Hi Araza, I just wanted to share some information about CBT videos. I haven’t used those videos, but on the following link I found some information that might be of some use to you.

Please go through both of the following links, and not just one.

Choose the Comfort and Fit frames!

When you try on the frames, move your head up and down, bend over and pick up something from the floor and see how well your glasses stay in place. With the properly adjusted nose pads and temples, your glasses should stay in place without pressing on your face.

Here are some key areas to check out to make sure the eyeglass frames you choose will be comfortable and fit well.

Click on photo to see style names for all frames. To ensure that the temples don’t dig into the side of your head, make sure the frames are wide enough for your face. The edge of the frames should protrude slightly beyond your face so that the temples don’t touch your head as they extend back to your ears.

Next, make sure the temples are long enough. Opticians can order many styles in a variety of temple lengths. The curve at the end of the temple should extend over the ear without pressing down upon it. The optician can reshape and adjust the curve at the end of the temple when your pick your eyeglasses up, but can’t make the temples shorter or longer, so make sure you select the best length.

Also check the nosepiece for comfort and fit. Many glasses have adjustable nose pads for fine-tuning, with soft, silicon nose pads. For frames without adjustable nose pads, make sure the fit is secure without pinching your bridge.

Why do you need bifocal lens?

Bifocal lenses are designed to provide good vision to people who have a condition called presbyopia. The main sign that you’re developing presbyopia is that you need to hold menus, newspapers and other reading material farther from your eyes in order to see it clearly.

Bifocal contact lenses come in both soft materials and rigid gas permeable (GP) materials. Some can be worn on a disposable basis. That means you have the convenience of throwing the lenses out at specified intervals (even daily, in some cases) and replacing them with fresh, new lenses. Also, one bifocal brand is available in silicone hydrogel material.

Kazuo Kawasaki line of rimless eyeglasses worn by Sarah Palin

It’s been awhile since the optical business has been as charged by celebrity specs as it has by the rimless pair the vice presidential nominee wears most of the time. If she wins, it could rock the vision-care market, which totals $26.6 billion a year, says tracker Jobson Optical Research.

It’s already shaking up the company that makes them.

“We keep getting calls from dealers who want to stock the exact shape and style that she’s wearing,” says Amy Hahn, vice president at Italee, the U.S. distributor of the frames designed by Kazuo Kawasaki, a Japanese industrial designer.

The Palin frame — minus the lenses — starts at a suggested $375. Depending on the type of lenses, the total package runs to $700.

“She’s what’s new, and consumers want what’s new,” says Dr. Joyce Brothers, the consumer psychologist. “But if she loses, you won’t see many people in those glasses.”

That still gives the eyeglass maker through Nov. 4 to cash in.

“Smart optometrists who don’t carry the line should,” says Gloria Nicola, senior editor at 20/20, an eyewear trade magazine. If they can’t get it quickly, she says, they should at least sell similar-looking brands.

Matching the look won’t be easy. Although the frames are sold at many optical boutiques, the shape of the strongly rectangular lenses was custom-made for Palin by Home Optics, an upscale retailer in Chugiak, Alaska.

Owner Joy Leedham went to Palin’s home in late December and fitted her in her kitchen — where Palin considered nearly 300 frames. They narrowed it to five frames, and Palin’s family helped pick the winner. The frame is Kawasaki’s 704 series, and the color is 34 gray, Hahn says.

Palin is nearsighted and has slight astigmatism, Leedham says. She does not wear bifocal lenses.

Palin told Leedham that she owned seven pairs of glasses. The frames that Palin picked “help her look fashion-forward,” Leedham says.

The Kawasaki frames are made from titanium and mounted via a screwless, tension system.

Similar but older versions of the frames have been worn by Colin Powell, David Letterman and Whoopi Goldberg, says Bart VanderVelde, national sales manager at Italee. But few celebs in glasses have set off this kind of frenzy, he says. “We’re still wondering what to do if she gets elected.”

UV Protection

The principal danger posed by the sun is in the form of ultraviolet radiation, or for short, UV radiation. UV radiation is a component of solar energy, but it can also be given off by artificial sources like welding machines, tanning beds and lasers.

You are probably aware of the danger posed by UV radiation to your skin, but may not realize that exposure to UV radiation can harm your eyes and affect your vision as well.

There are three types of UV radiation. One type, called UV-C, is absorbed by the ozone layer and does not present any threat. That’s not true of the other two types, UV-A and UV-B. More and more scientific evidence is showing that exposure to both UV-A and UV-B can have adverse long- and short-term effects on your eyes and vision.

If you are exposed, unprotected, to excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you are likely to experience an effect called photokeratitis.

Like a “sunburn of the eye” it may be painful and you may have symptoms including red eyes, a foreign body sensation or gritty feeling in the eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. Fortunately, this is usually temporary and rarely causes permanent damage to the eyes.

Long-term exposure to UV radiation can be more serious. A number of scientific studies and research growing out of the U.S. space program have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years may increase your chance of developing a cataract, and may cause damage to the retina, the nerve-rich lining of your eye that is used for seeing. The damage to the retina is usually not reversible.

The effects of UV radiation are cumulative. This means the longer your eyes are exposed to UV radiation, the greater the risk of developing such conditions as cataracts or macular degeneration in later life.

Researchers have not yet specifically determined how much exposure to UV radiation will cause how much damage, but a good recommendation is to wear quality sunglasses that offer good protection and a hat or cap with a wide brim whenever you are working outdoors, participating in outdoor sports, taking a walk, running errands or doing anything in the sun.

To provide protection for your eyes, your sunglasses should:
block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation;
screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light;
be perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection; and
have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition.
Polycarbonate lenses are a must for your sunglasses if you participate in potentially eye hazardous work or sports. These lenses provide the most impact resistance.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors in bright sunlight, wrap-around frames can provide additional protection from the harmful UV radiation.Don’t forget protection for children and teenagers. They typically spend more time in the sun than adults.

Be sure to see your doctor of optometry regularly for a thorough eye examination. It is a good way to monitor your eye health, maintain good vision, and keep track of your UV radiation protection needs as well as new advances in that protection.

SCP Certification SCP Training Exam

SCP Certification quantifies the effectiveness of customer support based upon a stringent set of performance standards and represents best practices within the technology support industry.

“Developing strategies for retaining customers and keeping them happy throughout the product life cycle has always been our top priority,” said JC Gonzalez, vice president of customer support for Ultimate Software. “Achieving SCP Certification for the third year in the row demonstrates this commitment to our customers and enables us to continue building a strong product support department and benchmarking our practices against other industry leaders.”

SCP is an internationally recognized standard created by the Service & Support Professionals Association (SSPA) and a consortium of IT companies to create a recognized quality certification for support centers and to provide a method of benchmarking for support center practices. SCP Certification requires comprehensive on-site audits to confirm that companies meet the requirements of more than 100 business elements defined in the SCP program. Certification measures factors such as corporate commitment and strategic direction, customer satisfaction, performance metrics, research and development interface, and other strategic areas of the support operation. Certified companies must continue to demonstrate their commitment to excellence and high performance standards through annual re-certification audits.

“By passing the rigorous requirements necessary to achieve SCP Certification, Ultimate Software has made it clear they are committed to delivering world-class support to their customers,” said Dennis Fukuyama, SCP auditor. “During the SCP Certification audit, Ultimate Software demonstrated a clear commitment to customer satisfaction and continuous improvement.”

Ultimate Software joins the ranks of leading technology companies that have achieved SCP Certification. Currently, over 80 companies representing over 200 support centers around the world are participating in the SCP program. These companies include industry leaders such as CompuCom (CMPC), Intuit Inc. (INTU), Xerox Corporation (XRX), Lucent Technologies (LU), Mentor Graphics Corporation (MENT), Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI), Lockheed Martin Inc. (LMT), Microsoft Ltd. Europe, and Sabre Inc. (TSG ), among others.

“SCP Certification has established itself as the global standard for service quality and is being rapidly adopted by leading technology companies,” said Bill Rose, founder and executive director of the Service & Support Professionals Association (SSPA). “Ultimate Software can be proud to be placed among other industry leaders in service excellence through their attainment of SCP Certification.”
