Taking out the trash.
Okay, clean up time! It's always entertaining to observe a lifecycle of a new project as it evolves. One of the interesting aspects of it is discovering that people are coming up with new ways to use it. The ways that the site was never intended to be used. This is good, no doubt. But can quickly turn ugly, unless these new trends are watched closely, and either encouraged, or suppressed - depending on the effects. Example. Spammers love Feedest because it's so easy to submit feeds - everything is automated, instant, and hands-free. There's no approval process as long as a feed is deemed valid. The flipside of this is that it makes it easy to dump thousands of garbage "feeds" into the system, thus creating many incoming links. Which only proves that Feedest is good for your Search-Engine Optimization. So, without getting too deep into the technicalities and inner works, some of the steps being taken in the direction of keeping Feedest clean and relevant:
- detecting abusers followed by blacklisting particular feeds and/or hosts;
- an option to mark feeds as "adult" and incorporating user-initiated filters;
- tracking feeds as they're being added - who, what, where from.
If you have any suggestions, let us hear them. After all, Feedest is all about user-generated content!
