The Miracle of Childbirth
I gave birth yesterday. And still I am feeling awash in feelings of awe, love and gratitude. In fact, I feel like I am in something I can only describe as a state of grace.
It came when a quiet peace suddenly descended upon me as I touched my newborn's face, only minutes old, and my mind filled with the words:
“… and, while with silent lifting mind I've trod …
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.”
It feels as though I am in the presence of God and clearly that I have witnessed, no participated!, in a miracle. The miracle of birth!
Whether or not you interpret the miracle of birth in the context of religious belief, the profound realization that it is indeed a miracle comes to everyone it touches with compelling force. And that is another miracle that happens! As a new soul enters our world, the people around are forever changed. Parents, family members and friends pause to really consider who they are, what they believe and what legacy they want to pass on. Awe, love, gratitude, grace, faith, self reflection -- are also miracles of childbirth.
